CARDINIA AQUATIC & RECREATION CENTRE

cellright.jpg (1316 bytes)

CLIENT: Shire of Cardinia

LOCATION: Pakenham Major Recreation Reserve Princes Highway, Pakenham

ARCHITECT: Prior + Cheney Pty Ltd

CONTRACT VALUE: $8.3M

CONSTRUCTION TIME : Approximately 18 months completed July 2006

PROJECT OUTLINE

The project comprises a new indoor aquatic centre for public use, developed by the Shire of Cardinia. The project was constructed on an undeveloped portion of a site on which the Council had previously constructed an indoor basketball stadium. This new project joined onto and interfaced with the existing building. The building is of unique design of double barrel form and curved on plan.

The structure is framed in fabricated steel comprising curving portal members connecting to a central spine truss. The exposed architectural steel is a dominant feature in the completed building. The central spine truss provides for the large unsupported roof spans to the pool hall and also provides support framing for the glazed roof skylight the length of the building.

The building is clad with Kalzip aluminium roofing and wall cladding. This is only the second project in Australia to use this product (the other being the Spencer Street Railway Station re-development).

Services include state of the art pool plumbing and filtration and airconditioning to the pool hall incorporating dehumidification. There are 3 indoor pools in the complex. A 25m 6 lane lap pool, a 14m programme pool and a free form children's pool with water features. The complex also includes a fully equipped gymnasium, amenities, crèche, café and administration.

The internal finish is complemented by striking curved ceilings. External feature pavement and landscaping complete a stunning project.

BOROONDARA SPORTS COMPLEX

cellright.jpg (1316 bytes)

CLIENT : City of Boroondara

LOCATION: Gordon Barnard Reserve, Belmore Road Balwyn

ARCHITECT: Prior + Cheney Pty Ltd

CONTRACT VALUE: $13.6M

CONSTRUCTION TIME: Approximately 18 months completed June 2006

PROJECT OUTLINE:

The project comprised the construction of a new 'state of the art' Sports Stadium and the redevelopment of 3 existing outdoor swimming pools for the City of Boroondara .

The site was the Gordon Barnard Reserve in Balwyn. Existing buildings on the site were demolished to make way for the main stadium building of 5,000m2. The stadium includes 4 basketball size courts, spectator gallery, administration area, café, general purpose rooms, amenities for both indoor and outdoor activities and storage facilities.

Works included extensive piling and site stabilisation in preparation for ground slab and large span steel frame. The Belmore Road elevation of the building features a two storey high glass curtain wall and the building utilises a variety of custom cladding systems to architectural effect. An extensive timber sports floor system has been installed to all the playing floor surfaces.

The project included major redevelopment works to the existing pools. The existing plant building was substantially reconstructed to house all new pumping, treatment and filtration equipment and systems. The pools were completely re-plumbed requiring existing concrete pool structures to be partly demolished for pipe installation and later made good.

The 50m lap pool and 25m programme pool walls were cut down and re-constructed to allow for the installation of 'wet-deck' backwash systems. These pools were completely refurbished and fully tiled. The existing dive pool was also refurbished. Extensive external works including new carparks, roads and landscaping completed this outstanding public facility.
